Listing Jobs by Skill Set

To understand the wide variety of jobs within the marketing industry today, you can also look at them from a skills perspective. For example:

  • Technical jobs — Sure, the company website needs a designer and a writer. But none of that content will ever make it online without some type of developer or programmer. This is one of many types of technical marketing jobs that are available.
  • Creative jobs — These positions would include graphic designers, logo specialists, writers and more. These creative types are usually supervised by some type of marketing manager (next item).
  • Management jobs — Every promotional team needs a manager to keep everyone on track, provide direction, and see tasks through to completion. These marketing jobs are usually reserved for people who have had some form of entry-level experience on a marketing team.
  • Supporting roles — In addition to the people who do the "hands on" work, a large marketing team will usually have some supporting staff members. For example, every team I've worked on in the past had some type of marketing coordinator. These are detail-oriented people who help with timelines, budgets and other important roles.
